Guide to chemical management
1. PURPOSE:
This guide will describe how to manage, preserve and use chemicals in manufacturing.
2. SCOPE:
This guide applies within the company (apply for ISO 14000).
3. DEFINITION:
Poisonous chemicals are chemicals that cause danger and damage on human and environment around on direct contact, smell or emitting into atmosphere, being thrown into water and so on.
4. RESPONSIBILITY:
• The board environment representative is responsible for supervising the implementation of this guide.
• The Environmental Project Division (EPD) and other offices are responsible for carrying out activities as mentioned in this guide.
• All the staffs are responsible for participating in the assigned tasks under the command of the EPD or the divisional chiefs.
5. GUIDE CONTENT:
For allowed chemicals
• All the poisonous chemicals in the standard list that the factory uses must be recorded in the poison maintenance list.
• Poisonous chemicals that need maintaining must have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
• In case of change in chemical used, approval from the deputy director as well as from the EPD is required. If that chemical is mentioned in the standard list, it will be updated in the maintenance list.
For the storing of chemicals
The chemical storage must obey the following conditions:
• Keep a list of chemicals that need maintaining in the storage.
• Fire protection equipment and other tools (sand, foam, water….) are necessary in case of any chemical spilling or burning.
• Goods are arranged separately by type and are labelled to distinguish with others. Containing barrels must not have any leak. Use tray or double section bag for poisonous chemicals.
• Place “no fire” and “no cigarette” signs at the storage. Closed the storage when there are no goods received or delivered.
• Use protectors as rule when contact with chemicals.
For activities of loading, unloading and transporting
• Storage staff must examine the safety and solidity of the containing barrels when unload.
• Check the label and warning sigh on the container.
• Must be extremely careful when unload hazardous chemicals and no smoking is allowed during the process (as well as in the company).
• If any leak is found, preventative method must be applied immediately to reduce the impact and the spread to other sectors.
• Other left requirements are mentioned in the standard list.
• The company must inform the suppliers, whose activities may have impact on the company environment of the regulation in this guide.
