Guide to sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Acid

1. PURPOSE:

This guide will explain the procedure for importing/ exporting NaOH and acid from the factory of the company.

2. SCOPE:

This guide applies in the factories of the company and to the suppliers.

3. RESPONSIBILITY:

The laboratory, the employees of chemical storage and related ones have the responsibility to follow this guide.

4. GUIDE CONTENT:

4.1. PREPARATION:

• Only assigned employee has the authority to import or export NaOH and Acid.
• This employee must understand about related MSDSs (Material Safety Data Sheets) of the imported NaOH and Acid.
• Wear working equipment and protectors such as: Glasses, boots, head protector, gloves, coat protecting from NaOH and Acid (if necessary).
• Have pipe system ready for transporting.

4.2. IMPORT:

• Check the barrel level and write down in the delivery note.
• Examine if there is any leak before importing (barrels, tank, tank truck, join pipe….).
• Carefully join pipe from tank truck with imported barrel. Ensure that the join point is not leaking.
• Open valve so that NaOH runs slowly and steadily to the receiving valve. Frequently check the joint point. If discover any leak, shut the valve off immediately.
• Open the valves into barrel after receiving. During the chemical receiving process, if discover any leak, immediately use sand, sawdust, and scrap cloth….to prevent the spreading over the surrounding.
• Place trays under the joint point in case of chemicals leaking into the sewage.
• After receiving, close the pumping machine and lock all related valves and let all the left NaOH and acid out into water tank when unjoin the pipes.
• Check the barrel level again and write down in the delivery note.
• In case of any incident happening, follow the procedure for responding to urgent situations.
